Before 1773, Joseph moved further south in the Shenandoah Valley to Rockingham County, Virginia. Family tradition indicates that Joseph fought in the Revolutionary War. His great granddaughter, Margaret Dispennette Kesler, remembers a uniform in the closet of her grandfather's, Adam Dispennet, home. However, no documentation was found to support this tradition. War records were destroyed during the War of 1812 and during the Civil War
Joseph & his 2 brothers escaped an Indian massacre in 1756 by hiding in shocks
of grain in Mountain Falls, Frederick County, VA. His parents & 3 sisters were
massacred. The raid was under Shawnee Chief Killbuck.
