Joseph Cooper was born on 12th November 1842 at South Hylton in the township of Ford and parish of Bishopwearmouth, County Durham. He was the son of Jane Cooper, late Bradshaw, formerly Watson, and her husband John Cooper, a potter. Joseph appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings at South Hylton. When Joseph was fourteen years old, his father John died. Joseph appears in the 1861 census living at South Hylton with his mother and working as a ship carpenter. In 1864, when he was 22 years old, Joseph's mother Jane died.
In 1866 Joseph was married to Isabella Thompson. She was originally from Monkwearmouth, but had spent most of her childhood living in South Hylton, and indeed had spent some of her childhood living just a few doors away from Joseph and his family. However, they did not marry in South Hylton, but at St Andrew's Church in the Deptford area of the adjoining parish of Bishopwearmouth and town of Sunderland. After their marriage they lived in South Hylton for a few years, having their first two children there and appearing there in the 1871 census.
Some time between 1871 and 1875 they left South Hylton and moved to the town of Hebburn on the banks of the Tyne, a few miles north of South Hylton. Their youngest daughter was born at Hebburn in 1875, and they appear to have then stayed in Hebburn for the rest of their lives. Each census from 1881 to 1911 finds Joseph and Isabella living with at least one of their children in Hebburn.
Joseph died in 1913, aged 70. Isabella outlived him by 17 years and died in 1931, aged 86.
