John Cooper claimed to have been born in about 1798 at Hanley in Staffordshire. His first confirmed sighting however is not until 1836, when he was married over 150 miles away from Hanley at Bishopwearmouth in County Durham, near Sunderland. His wife was a widow named Jane Bradshaw, formerly Watson, who had two young daughters.

John and Jane settled in the village of South Hylton in the township of Ford in the parish of Bishopwearmouth. They had three children born at South Hylton between 1838 and 1842. John worked as a potter.

John died at the age of 62, at the Union Workhouse in Sunderland. He was buried at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery in Sunderland on 5th January 1857. Jane outlived him by nearly eight years.
