Joseph Cannon was baptised on 10th August 1760 at Hitchin in Hertfordshire, son of Ann Cannon, formerly Bracey, and her husband Godfrey Cannon, a labourer.

Joseph's mother died in 1781.

Joseph was married on 7th April 1782 at Hitchin to Ann Pateman. They went on to have three children baptised at Hitchin between 1787 and 1791, although the first died as a baby. Ann died a few weeks after their third child was baptised; the boy was baptised on 15th May 1791 and Ann was buried on 3rd July. The baby did not long survive his mother, being buried on 17th August.

A few months later, Joseph married again. His second wife was Mary Smith, and they married at Hitchin on 3rd November 1791. They went on to have ten children baptised at Hitchin between 1792 and 1812. Joseph was consistently described as a labourer on his children's baptisms.

Joseph's father died in 1793.

Mary died in 1837, when she was said to be 68 years old. Her last abode was given as Walsworth, a hamlet to the north-east of Hitchin. Joseph appears in the 1841 census living at Walsworth with his son William, who was a publican, and William's family.

Joseph died at the age of 82, being buried at Hitchin on 30th November 1842.
