Mary Smith's origins have yet to be established. If the age quoted when she died was correct, then she was born around 1768. Her first confirmed sighting is on 3rd November 1791, when she married a labourer called Joseph Cannon at Hitchin in Hertfordshire. He was a widower whose first wife had died earlier that year.

Mary and Joseph went on to have ten children baptised at Hitchin between 1792 and 1812.

Mary died in 1837, being buried at Hitchin on 20th January 1837. She was said to be 68 years old when she died. Her last abode was given as Walsworth, a hamlet to the north-east of the town. Joseph survived her by four years.
