Charles Cannon was born on 20th December 1746 and baptised on 4th January 1747 at Hitchin in Hertfordshire. He was the son of Ann Cannon, formerly Bracey, and her husband Godfrey Cannon, a labourer.

On 5th October 1772, aged 25, Charles married Sarah Taylor at Hitchin. They went on to have three children baptised at Hitchin between 1775 and 1779. Charles was described as a labourer on the children's baptism records. Charles's mother died in November 1781. Charles's wife Sarah died three weeks later, being buried on 15th December 1781, leaving Charles with the three small children.

Charles remarried on 26th October 1783. His second wife was Elizabeth Chalkey, who was probably about nine years older than him. They do not appear to have had any further children.

Charles's father died in 1793.

Charles died at the age of 70, just short of what would have been his 71st birthday. He was buried at Hitchin on 16th December 1817. He had been living at Walsworth, a hamlet to the north-east of the town. Elizabeth survived him by just over five years.
