Elizabeth Chalkley's origins have yet to be established. If the age quoted when she died is correct then she was born around 1737. Her first confirmed sighting is on 26th October 1738, when she married Charles Cannon, a labourer and widower, at Hitchin in Hertfordshire. He had three children from his first marriage. Elizabeth and Charles do not appear to have had any further children together.

Charles died in 1817, aged 70. His last abode was given as Walsworth, a hamlet to the north-east of the town. Elizabeth survived him by five years. By the end of her life she was living at the Biggin, an almshouse for the elderly in the centre of Hitchin. She was buried at Hitchin on 7th March 1823. She was said to be 85 years old.
