Yerger in 1850

John and Mary probably moved to Union County shortly after they were married. Both John and his father lived in this area for a time. (When they are listed at the time both are living in the same area, this John is called "John Jr.".) One history says, "Hugh Wilson opened the first tavern in Hartleton (Union County) in 1773. He was succeeded by Martin Selton in 1778, John Yerger and John Yerger, Jr. The tavern was located on the post route established April 1, 1798 from Northumberland to Bellefonte." Another history says , John Yerger came there (Hartleton) in 1804, and his son, John Jr. commenced keeping tavern there the same year, and in 1814 was still keeping there. He (John Jr.) removed from Union County and bought a farm in Nittany Valley near Jacksonville, where some of his descendants still reside."
