When or where he died is not certain. Where is John S. Woolever, b. 1812 in NJ, in the 1870 census? Can't find him.
After the birth of their first daughter, Catharine, on 27 March 1837, in Warren Co., NJ, they migrated to Hocking Co., Ohio, where their daughter died on 12 August 1839, and is buried in Collison Cemetery in Hocking County. Their next 2 children were sons, Phillip and William, both of whom died in February 1849, and are buried in Collison Cemetery next to their sister. The couple had 9 more children who lived to adulthood. In October, 1865, John and Sarah were divorced in Hocking County. When Sarah divorced him she
cited extreme cruelty. His ex-wife, Sarah Rush Woolever, is buried in Hocking Co. in the St. John the Baptist Cemetery on S.R. 374.

Commited on charge of Assault with Intent to Kill
Application to Let to Bond
August 29, 1865 Motion filed and Defendant ordered to enter into bond on $300
Sept. 2, 1865 Michael Eckstein filed his bond and Defendant discharged from jail.
John S. left Hocking Co. (year unknown). A grandaughter, Della Reid, of Gladwin, MI, told Ralph Woolever that when she was about 8 years old she asked her mother (Rebecca Ann Woolever Lemon) "Whatever became of Grandpa?" and she replied "He died up at Newark." (Licking Co.)
In a Woolever Family Bible that belonged to a Hankinson Family in the 1960s there are many family births and deaths listed. There is a death date for John Woolever for February 21, 1874, listed immediately after the death of John's father, Philip Woolever, on 21 November 1864. (This might be John S.!) There are a couple versions of the births and deaths copied in Dad's handwriting with the 21 Feb 1874 date, and also a copy of a letter from Rilla Nixon Woolever when she had transcribed the records from that Bible with the same date. But in one of the Woolever Family Bible listings written in Dad's handwriting is a John Woolever died March 1874 in a slightly different list (possibly from a different Bible).

Tombstone reads: John Woolever DIED Feb. 21, 1874 AGED 62 Y 1 M 6 D
We believe this is the grave of John S. Woolever, b. 27 March 1812, in Warren County, New Jersey. He married Sarah Rush (indexed as Rust) the 18th of August 1835 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Easton, Northampton Co., PA.
Based on the age at death engraved in this tombstone, the birthdate would be January 15, 1812. However, we believe their calculation was wrong. If you ADD 1 Month and 6 Days to February 21 (instead of SUBTRACTING it) that calculates to March 27th.
The Perry County death record for John Woolever gives the death date of 21 February 1874, with a death place of Madison Twp., Perry Co., OH. It states he is 60 years old and born in New Jersey. It states he was a resident of Licking County and that he was Married at the time of death.

Estate papers found by Dick Kocher in Licking Co. are dated 16 Mar 1874. A date of 21 Aug 1876 is
also shown in the estate papers. This 21 Aug date seems important because it would be 2 1/2 years after a death of 21 Feb 1874 - did the law at that time require estates be settled within 2 1/2 years? Many Licking County records were destroyed in a fire. Dick Kocher found only an account record of his estate - which totaled less than $300. The copy Dick Kocher had was hardly legible.
In 2014 I found a legible copy of the estate record online at familysearch.org

To determine the relationship of William Lock to John S. Woolever's estate, I found William Lock in 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census records of Newton Twp., Licking Co., Ohio. William Lock b. abt. 1812-1820, wife's name was Mary - research on ancestry.com gives her maiden name as Mary Chilcote on a user's family tree. Many Chilcotes are buried in the Bethel Methodist Episcopal Cemetery where the grave and marker for John Woolever, d. 21 Feb 1874, is located. The son of John S. and Sarah (Rush) Woolever, John S., Jr., married a Mary Matilda Chilcote on 17 May 1874, after the death of his first wife, Sarah Morris (whom he md. in 1867 - they had one dau. named Missina or Vcemimia). In the 1870 Census John Jr. is in the household of his mother and siblings without a wife, Sarah Morris, or daughter.
