"1. John Wood of Roydon, co. Essex, yeoman, was probably born about 1570-80, but his baptism does not appear in the Parish Registers of Roydon. He may have been a son or grandson of the man burled as 'Father Wood' at Roydon, 18 Apr. 1592. He is certainly the John Wood who was taxed at Roydon in Harlow Hundred, Essex, in the Lay Subsidy of 21 James I (l623) [P.R.O. 112/613]. He was buried at Roydon 7 Dec. 1635, leaving no will, and there is no record of his estate. No member of the Wood family was taxed at Roydon in the Ship Money Subsidy of 1636 [Charles E. Banks Mss., Rare Book Room, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.: Essex Subsidles]."
