In Salem at 1870, with real estate valued at $4000 and 1880 census and again at 1900 Census which shows they had 3 children, two living. 1861 Salem Directory shows him living at 11 Hathorne. 1884 & 1886 Salem Directory lists him as a carpenter with a house at 12 Mt. Vernon. Listed at 61 Summer Street in 1895 & 1904 Salem Directory.

"Former Assessor John S. Wardwell of Salem died at his home in that city yesterday. He was born in Salem and was in his seventy-second year. He was a contractor and builder for many years, and he also had charge of several estates. In served in the Common Council in 1894, 1895 and 1896, and for six years was a member of the Board of Assessors. He was a past Grand of Essex Lodge, I.O.O.F., past high priest of Naumkeag Encampment and a member of Oriental Lodge A.O.U.W., and the Salem Charitable Mechanics Association."
