John Ward was baptised on 27th March 1808 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, son of Ann Ward, formerly Allam, and her husband Luke Ward, a carpenter.

On 1st April 1830, aged 23, John married Charlotte Naylor, who was from the neighbouring village of Heckington. They married at Heckington but returned to Great Hale after their marriage, having seven children baptised there between 1833 and 1846, although three of their daughters died as babies and their youngest son died aged 17 in 1863.

John's maternal grandfather, John Allam, died in 1841. John was left an income of five pounds per year in his grandfather's will.

Each census from 1841 to 1881 finds John and Charlotte living in Great Hale, often described as living on South Street. John worked as a carpenter.

John's father died in 1844 and his mother in 1857.

In 1871 John and Charlotte had two grandsons and a boarder living with them.

Charlotte died on 8th July 1884 at Great Hale, aged 74. John appears in the 1891 census living alone in a two roomed house in Great Hale. He survived Charlotte by ten years and died at Great Hale on 4th November 1894, aged 86.
