Notes by Carrie Todd McLaughlin, 1947: "John Allen Todd, born at Bedminster, New Jersey, August 16, 1828, married Dorcas Adaline Rodenbaugh at Clinton, New Jersey, July 6, 1850, moved to Canton, Illinois April 12, 1853. For eight years he worked at the blacksmith trade, although watchmaking would have been more fitting to his finely organized mind and his slight physique. In 1861 he moved to a farm near Roseville, Illinois, where he farmed until 1886 when he retired to Monmouth. He died June 23, 1901, and is buried beside his wife who was born at Ithaca, New York, January 29, 1827 and died February 8, 1895. This couple, by hard work and judicious management, acquired property sufficient to afford a comfortable living, give a full college education to each of their six children and have plenty for the needs and comforts of old age. On moving to Monmouth they transferred their church letters to the First Presbyterian church where he was made a deacon, which office he had held in the Roseville church. Always sympathetic toward the downtrodden and oppressed, he espoused the abolition of slavery and later, for the sake of decency and righteousness, he supported the prohibition of the liquor traffic. Modest and unassuming, he made no display of the admirable qualities of mind and character which governed his life and the tributes conferred upon his memory by intimate friends are among my choicest recollections.
