About John E. Swinger

John E. Swinger was born in late 1843 or early 1844 in Indiana, the son of Conrad Swinger and his wife Mary Emerich. It is likely that John's middle name was "Emerich", after his mother's family name. The first record of John E. Swinger was recorded in the 1850 U.S. Census in Monroe Township, Darke County, Ohio, where his family had migrated from Indiana between his birth in late 1843 or 1844 and November 1850, when the 1850 Census was taken.

Prior to the 1860 U.S. Census, John's family had migrated to Taylor Township, Howard County, Indiana, where the family was recorded on 6 July 1860. Included in the census record were John (age 16), and John's younger siblings Jesse (age 14), Sarah (age 5), Alvin (age 3) and Harvey (age 1).

John and his younger brother Jesse both served on the Union side of the Civil War, both enlisting and serving with Indiana Regiments. John served in the 63rd Regiment, Indiana Infantry and brother Jesse served with Company A, 130th Indiana Infantry Regiment, and gave his life for his country when he was killed in action on 1 September 1864 in the final battle of the "Atlanta Campaign", between the Confederate Forces of Lt. Gen. William Hardee and Gen. Oliver Howard's Union Army, a battle that was won by the Union when they defeated the Confederate Army in Atlanta setting the stage for Gen. William T. Sherman's "March to the Sea", hastening the end of the war.

John E. Swinger's service in the Civil War began with his enlistment in Indiana on 30 August 1862. United States Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, 1861-1865 show that he enlisted in Company F, Indiana 63rd Infantry Regiment on 30 Aug 1862 and was mustered out on 21 Jun 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina. In "A history of the formation, settlement and development of Hamilton County, Indiana, from the year 1818 to the close of the Civil War", by Augustus Finch, it lists John E. Swinger in Company F of the Sixty-Third Indiana Regiment as a Private with three years of service. United States. Civil War Draft Registrations Records, 1863-1865 list John Swinger as age 20 on October 10, 1863 from Howard County, Indiana in the Enlistment Records signed by a Col. Calvin Cowgill, a member of the Indiana House of Representatives and Provost Marshall in the 11th Judicial District of Indiana.

John Swinger married Matilda McReynolds on 5 July 1866 in nearby Boone County, Indiana. He had one known son, Charles Lewis Swinger, born in 1868. John E. Swinger likely died prior to 1872, as "Matilda Swinger" is found in the marriage records of Indiana as marrying John Fanchier on 7 February 1872 in nearby Howard County, Indiana. [Indiana, Marriage Collection, 1800-1941]. Additional research is needed on his family.
