Based on a letter from A. B. Stoops, his son, I believe John was the son of John Stoops, and grandson of 'Pioneer' [William?] Stoops.

 According to information on the Rootsweb mailing list for Stoops, John 'Little John' Stoops was born 27 April 1816, probably in Nicholas Co., Kentucky. He married Ellen Amanda Shankland who was born 1820 in Nicholas Co. and died 1897 in Mt. Sterling, Montgomery Co., Kentucky.  They had four children: Walter; Alexander Blair (1842-1923) who married Mary Belle Jones and had 3 children; Martha Ermina, died young; and Miranda D., 1847-1860. {Stoops Mailing List, from Dean Stoops, 31 May 1999, <www.rootsweb.com>, 15 Nov 2003}
In the 1840 census for Nicholas Co., Kentucky, there are listings for James D. [son of Wm], John Jr., John S., and William (p. 58), as well as Margaret and Moses 'Sloop' (p. 86}
 In the 1840 census for Nicholas Co., Kentucky, there is a record for John Stoops Jr., with 1 male 20-30 [Little John], 1 female 15-20 [sister Maria?], 1 female 20-30 [wife Ellen?], and 1 female 50-60 [mother Sarah?].

  In the 1850 census for Nicholas Co., Kentucky, John Stoops is a farmer, age 34 from Kentucky, with $1,500.  His wife Ellen A. is 30, and their children are Alexander B., 8; and Miranda, 3.  Also in the household are [mother? great-aunt?] Sarah Stoops, 64 from Maryland, [cousin?] Maria Stoops 30 from Kentucky and William Bowen, age 22, laborer from Kentucky.  {p.455 a & B; Nicholas Co Kentucky Archives, <www.rootsweb.com/census>} NOTE: He is the only Stoops household left in Nicholas Co. Sarah could be his aunt.

 In the 'History of Nicholas County' by Joan Wesinger Conley, listed in the Parish Chapel Graveyard are "Stoops, Sarah, wife of Wm. Stoops" and "Miranda D., daughter of J. and E. A. Stoops, b. May 17, 1845, d. Aug. 13, 1865".
 In the 1880 census for Mt. Sterling, Montgomery Co., Kentucky, John 'Storps' is a farmer, age 60 from Kentucky (father Kentucky, mother Maryland).  His wife Elen Amanda is 59, born Kentucky (father Maryland, mother Pennsylvania) They also have Sally Payne, 18, housekeeper; and Richard Rodgers, laborer, 35. {p.467b}
