John Stokes was baptised on 10th November 1786 at Hitchin in Hertfordshire, son of Elizabeth Stokes, formerly Thrussell, and her husband John Stokes, a labourer.
John was married on 9th October 1807 at Hitchin to Sarah Dawbone. They went on to have four children baptised at Hitchin between 1807 and 1816. The youngest child's baptism gives the family's abode as Lyles Row, on the east side of the town. All the children's baptisms describe John as being a bricklayer.
John's father died in 1817, and his mother in 1825.
The 1841 census finds John and Sarah living at Lyles Row. Sarah died early the following year, being buried at Hitchin on 14th February 1842. She was said to be 54 years old.
Six months later, John married again. His second wife was Sarah Taylor. When they married, John was 55 and Sarah 34. They went on to have two more daughters together in 1844 and 1847.
The 1851 census finds John, Sarah and their two daughters living at Back Street in Hitchin (which would later be renamed Queen Street). John was described as both a bricklayer and a pauper in 1851.
John died at the age of 70. He was buried at Hitchin on 23rd February 1857. Sarah survived him by nine years.
