Elizabeth Stokes was baptised on 2nd August 1780 at Ware in Hertfordshire, daughter of Elizabeth Stokes, formerly Thrussell, and her husband John Stokes. John and Elizabeth had married just under two years earlier at Hitchin, a few miles north of Ware. After Elizabeth's baptism, the family returned to Hitchin before their next child was born in 1783.

Elizabeth married a Thomas Pateman at Hitchin on 9th August 1802, aged 22. He was living in the neighbouring parish of St Ippolyts at the time of their marriage. They had a daughter baptised at St Ippolyts in 1803.

Elizabeth died at the age of 25, being buried at Hitchin on 6th April 1806. Both her parents outlived her. Thomas survived her by 34 years, and remarried in 1809.
