Thomas Pateman was baptised on 11th October 1772 at Hitchin in Hertfordshire, son of a labourer called Edward Pateman and his wife Sarah.

Thomas was married on 9th August 1802, aged 29, to Elizabeth Stokes. They married at Hitchin, although Thomas was living in the neighbouring parish of St Ippolyts at the time of their marriage. They went on to have a daughter, Sarah, baptised at St Ippolyts the following year.

Elizabeth died in 1806, aged 25.

Thomas married again at St Ippolyts on 15th May 1809 to Elizabeth Warner, who was originally from Walthamstow in Essex. They went on to have another seven children baptised at Hitchin between 1810 and 1825, and may also have had a child baptised at St Ippolyts in 1810 as well. Several of the younger children's baptisms record that the family lived in the Hollow Lane area of Hitchin, on the east side of the town. Thomas was consistently described as a labourer. It would appear that Thomas had some difficulties with the authorities in 1829, being removed under the Poor Laws from Hitchin back to St Ippolyts. Whatever the circumstances were, he appears to have later returned to the Hollow Lane area of Hitchin.

Thomas died at the age of 67, being buried at Hitchin on 17th June 1840. Elizabeth survived him by nearly seventeen years.

There were other people called Thomas Pateman baptised in Hitchin, notably one in 1779 and one in 1781. The child baptised in 1779 died as an infant in 1781, and the one baptised in 1781 (brother of the one who had recently died) later moved to Yorkshire, appearing there in the 1851 census clearly giving his place of birth as Hitchin.
