Sarah Dawbone's origins have yet to be established. If the age quoted when she died is correct, then she was born around 1787, and in the 1841 census she indicated that she had been born in Hertfordshire, although no plausible baptism for her has yet been found.

Her first confirmed sighting is on 9th August 1807, when she married a bricklayer called John Stokes at Hitchin in Hertfordshire. They went on to have four children baptised at Hitchin between 1807 and 1816. The youngest child's baptism gives the family's abode as Lyles Row, on the east side of the town.

The 1841 census finds Sarah and John still living at Lyles Row. Sarah died early the following year, being buried at Hitchin on 14th February 1842. She was said to be 54 years old. John survived her by fifteen years, and remarried a few months after her death.
