John had his own tax and accounting firm on Main Street, Spring Valley, but had two unsuccessful eye operations that left him blind. Phyllis ran the business while John stayed on hand and read tax updates in braille. He managed to walk the streets of Spring Valley with his cane. For years he had been employed in the Ramapo Town offices under his uncle Edwin Wallace, at the time Supervisor of the Town of Ramapo. John was an Army veteran of WWII, serving in Swansea, Wales, Paris, and Frankfurt.
