Facts and Events
[edit] John Shepard's Date of BirthThere is obvious disagreement over the birth date of John. The records of the churchS5 presumably give the children in birth order, making John born before Sarah (whose birth was recorded in 1655). This is confirmed by the will of Rebecca's brother Thomas Greenhill, dated 16 Jul 1653 (Manwaring, p. 1:119), which names "Rebeckah Shepherds two children, John and Rebeckah Shepherd". Assuming SavageS2 is converting 1657 of the Cambridge VRsS3 to the modern equivalent of 1658, these two sources both appear to be the same, and both probably represent a misreading of the original record. Not seeing the original record, we can only guess that the actual digit could be either a 1, i.e., 1651/52 (especially a continental style one), or a 2, i.e., 1652/53. PaigeS4 goes with the first, ShepardS1 goes with the second. Either one places his birth nicely in the gap between Rebecca and Sarah. "Not all of the … children [of John2 Shepard] had their births entered in the vital records of Cambridge, but the birth of Sarah is entered as 5 Mar. 1655 [i.e., 1655/6], and that of John is entered (if we trust the printed record) as 22 Jan. 1657 [i.e., 1657/8], which Savage [Gen. Dict.] renders of course as 1658. But Paige in his History of Cambridge (1877), while agreeing as to other stated dates of the children, gives the birth of John as 22 Jan. 1651/2, which implies that he read the entry as 1651 rather than as 1657. This enabled him to follow the careful Mitchell as to the order of birth of the first four children, and a study of Mitchell's entries shows that he was in the habit of listing the children by age, regardless of sex. In view of this, and considering how easy it is in reading some of the old scripts to mistake a '1' hooked at the top for a '7', the editor has decided to follow Paige and Mitchell rather than Savage and the more recently printed vital records. This conclusion, indeed, is virtually proved by the [16 July] 1653 will of Mrs. Shepard's brother, Thomas Greenhill, which named "her two children, John and Rebeckah Shepherd," showing that John was born before 1653."[6] [edit] The Estate of Deacon John Shepard of Hartford"Probate Records.
