274. Alexander Semple, eldedest son of James or "English" Semple, was born in London, April 29, 1805; emigrated to America, May, 1848; died at Warehouse Point, Ct., July 5, 1873. Married Jeannette Buchanan (born February 11, 1806), granddaughter of James Buchanan (of Kilbarchan), antiquarian and intimate friend of the poet, Robert Tannahill. At the opening of the War of the Rebellion, he, with four companions, Chauncy M. Allen, Henry Allen, Irwin Cooper, and James H. House (now living at Windsorville, Connecticut, the only surviving one of the five), went from Windsor, Connecticut and enlisted at Hartford, August 12, 1861, with the "1st Connecticut Squadron of Cavalry," under Major William Mallory of Bridgeport. The squadron was detached to the "Harris Light Cavalry, or Second N. Y." Semple was a member of Company 'D', and company bugler.S1
He was captured near Hagerstown, Maryland, about July 10, 1863, and was taken to Belle Isle, from which he escaped by swimming the James River; was run down by bloodhounds, recaptured, and taken to Libby Prison; afterwards transferred to "Castle Thunder" from which he escaped by tunneling, and made his way into the Union lines at Yorktown. He served three years and was honorably discharged, August 1864. He died unmarried, January 3, 1880.S1
