"He received a good education, was a surveyor, and for a time in theemploy of the Presqu' Isle Land Company, and, in 1817, was member of theLegislature from Dauphin county. After the death of his uncle, JamesRutherford, in 1809, he purchased the moiety of his grandfather's farm,which had fallen to James upon the death of Thomas, in 1777, and now (in1885) owned by John A.
