"After the death of his father, in 1832, he was taken by his uncle,William Rutherford, in whose family he remained until he attained hismajority. He received a liberal education, and read medicine under Dr. W.W. Rutherford, of Harrisburg, graduating at the University ofPennsylvania in March, 1849. He at once began the practice of medicine atNew Cumberland, which promised bright, but, his health failing, he wascompelled to relinquish the duties of his profession. He returned home,and undertook the superintendence of the farm, hoping thereby toreestablish his health. This proved futile, for he gradually failed, andhe died at Harrisburg. Intelligent, amiable, and upright, Dr. LeviRutherford's young life left a rose-tinted memory in many households."(Egle, William Henry. "Pennsylvania Genealogies: Scotch-Irish andGerman."
