"He received a fair education and was brought up as a farmer. Born amidthe thunders of the Revolution, he inherited the military spirit of hisfather, and became quite prominent as an officer, serving in all thegrades from a lieutenant up to that of a commission of colonel, whichoffice he declined. In 1816 he was elected a director of the poor, andserved as a member of the House of Representatives from 1819 to 1821, andagain from 1829 to 1831.
