notes by Rena RANSOM, 27 Mar 2004: In 1871, John Ransom paid taxes on land and buildings of Range 6, Tract 10, Lots 1 & 2, located in Mid H and B. John and Almira owned 91.50 acres valued at $1647 with a per acre value of $18. The farm was comprised of 20 acres of arable and plow land; 56.50 acres of meadow and pasture land; 15 acres of uncultivated or wood land. Their house was valued at $150 and their other buildings had a value of $100. The County Board of Equalization deducted $25 and the State Board deducted $225 leaving a final value of $1647 to be taxed. Assessment of Real Property in Thompson Township, Geauga County, Ohio, for the Year 1870. Page 8-9. Microfilm. Chardon Public Library. Chardon, Ohio.
Neither John nor Elmira Ransom paid taxes in Thompson Township in 1872, 1873 and 1874. The tax duplicate was not checked for other townships. Their son Giles appears on the duplicate for this period and a cursory examination indicates that he purchased his parents former property.
In 1876, John Ransom paid taxes on 50 acres of land in Range 6, Tract 10, located in west mid H of Lot 17 in Thompson Township. The property was valued at $827 and the State, County and all general taxes amounted to $7.20. NOTE: THERE IS AN X TO THE LEFT OF JOHN'S NAME ON THE LIST. I DID NOT CHECK TO SEE WHAT THE X DENOTED.
