   'John William Provance served as private in Capt. William Crawford's 5th battalion, Washington County, Pennsylvania militia. He was born 1742; died in Fayette County, Pa.'

   The contributor has incorrect birth years for both John and his wife, but this source provides secondary evidence for the given names of Sarah (Yard) (Wright) Provance's second husband.
   
   The source of John's 1742 birth year might be the 1742 birth year of John Purviance, who also served in the Revolutionary War, but in a Cumberland County battalion. These men have been frequently conflated in family trees.
