RESEARCH NOTES

Some Ancestry and My Heritage trees would have you believe that he was born in Wales, this is incorrect, he was born in South Molton, Devon, England. His parents were Joseph Palmer and Elizabeth Gayer, widow of Edward Heyward. Ancestry trees would also have you believe that he had 7 children not 5, for notes on this see his wife's profile. Ancestry trees would also have you believe that he was a clergyman, he was not, he was an Attorney at law. Some Ancestry trees would have you also believe that he was knighted, he was not.

This pedigree was edited by Colby, Frederic Thomas, 1827-1899.

He was related to all 5 families and he edited many genealogical works including some for the Harlequin Society

Despite what thepeerage says, however John Palmer was an Attorney at Law and not a Clergyman, the entry in the peerage was information gathered originally from the works of Frederic Thomas Colby, and added to, by a collaboration of three cousins and I use the term loosely here for cousins. This work was done from the  1980's to the early 2000's. I believe that the information on thepeerage is correct, or mostly correct. A review of the work on thepeerage, done by me has found only a few errors.

The arms as shown https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palmer_House,_Great_Torrington in the stained glass windows, do not according to the College of Arms, belong to this Palmer Family. They were originally given to Henry Palmer, merchant of London and of Lambourne. Essex, England in the 22nd year of the reign of Elizabeth I. There is no known connection between John Palmer born South Molton, Devon and Henry Palmer. It appears that John Palmer just liked the look of these arms and decided to adopt them without the blessing of the College of Arms.
