    (1) John ("Little John") McNiel (b. 1784, d, Dec, 1851) m. Aug. 5, 1805 Rebecca Griffith (b. 1784, d. 1854) dau. of Jonathan Griffith of Franklin Co. John McNiel returned to his father's 147 acre farm in 1808, later bought the land, and lived on it until his death. He enlisted in Bath Co., in May 1813, in the Sixth Regiment, Virginia Militia, under Capt. Griffin Lampkin, and served in the defense of Norfolk. John and Rebecca McNiel had issue: Jacob (b. 1822 d. 1842). "Little John" McNiel's discharge, dated Jan. 10, 1814, said he was "a brave and correct soldier." He was granted land for his military service.
