A few months after the marriage of John and Susannah, the will of Thomas Lamar I was filed for probate, on May 29, 1714 and by its terms, John became owner of half of the real estate of his father. He was given the home place in Prince George County and there is where he probably lived, died and was buried. John Lamar also seems to have been successful and to have enjoyed unusual prosperity through his own efforts, because he became the owner of a number of plantations which he later passed on to his children.

It is interesting to note here that the a favorite brother of John's wife Susannah (Tyler) Lamar was named Mareen Tyler after their grandfather. They named one of their sons after him and the name Mareen became a Lamar family tradition. Note that the Army spelled it Marien and he was a Major who was killed in action at the battle of Paoli. The name Mareen is found in several successive generations of this branch of the family.

According to his will which was dated February 28, 1758, probated November 1, 1758, and recorded in Prince George County, only four of his sons survived him since one of his sons, John II had died in 1756 leaving several children. His will divided his property among his sons - Thomas, Robert, Mareen, and Richard, and his daughters, Susannah (born November 23, 1726) aAnn, Rachel, Priscilla, Mary and Elizabeth and a special bequest was made to the children of the deceased son, John II. This will was not probated until 1774.
