John and his wife Elizabeth, brother William and their father emigrated to America from Germany in 1852. They settled for a year at Great Falls, N.Y., didn't like it, and in 1854 they walked to (St. Peter) to Traverse des Sioux, an Indian trading post in Minnesota. 

   They founded Klein and Company to manufacture and sell retail furniture. John left the business in 1870 Mankato and his brotheer William bought him out of the business. Upon William's death in 1887 (circa)  the business was taken over by his son Henry operated the business for two years and then his brother Martin (a minor, born  2/28/1869)) took charge along with his mother
