John Joseph Kelly was born on 19th May 1869 at Birkenhead in Cheshire, son of Catherine Kelly, formerly Ralston, and her husband Dennis Kelly, a boilermaker. John was the fourth (but third surviving) of the couple's eleven children. John appears in both the 1871 and 1881 censuses living with his parents and siblings in Birkenhead.

In September 1889, aged 20, John Joseph married Ellen Jones from Bangor in Caernarfonshire. They married in Liverpool, but returned to Birkenhead to live. John worked as a cattle drover and dock labourer. They had at least twelve children, although at least four died young. John's father Dennis died in 1904. His mother Catherine died in 1933.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, John and Ellen were living at 31 Thomas Street in Birkenhead.

John died in 1947, aged 77. Ellen survived him by two years.
