Ellen Jones was born on 29th January 1872 at Bangor in Caernarvonshire, daughter of a pork butcher named Thomas Jones and his wife Elizabeth. The 1881 census finds Ellen living with her parents and siblings at 37 Fountain Street in Bangor.

In September 1889, aged 17, she married John Joseph Kelly, a cattle drover and dock labourer. Ellen reported that her father had died by this time. They married in Liverpool, but then settled on the opposite side of the Mersey in Birkenhead, where John was from. Ellen and John had at least 12 children, although at least four of these died young. At the outbreak of the Second World War they were living at 31 Thomas Street in Birkenhead.

John died in 1947, aged 77. Ellen survived him by two years, dying in 1949, also aged 77.
