Dennis Kelly was born on 21st April 1876 at Birkenhead in Cheshire, son of Catherine Kelly, formerly Ralston, and her husband Dennis Kelly, a boilermaker. Young Dennis was the seventh (but sixth surviving) of the couple's eleven children. The 1881 census finds him living with his parents and siblings at 22 Eldon Street in Birkenhead. In 1891 they were nearby at 8 Eldon Place, and Dennis was by this time working as a dock labourer.
In 1896, aged 20, Dennis married Margaret O'Neill, who was 16 and also from Birkenhead. They married at St Werburgh's Catholic Church in Birkenhead on 4th October 1896. They went on to have six children together, although three died young and one of the three who survived to adulthood died aged 21.
The 1901 census finds Margaret and Dennis living with her widowed mother at 49 St Anne Street. They appear to have stayed in that area for the rest of their lives; the 1911 census and the 1939 register taken at the outbreak of the Second World War both find them at 47 St Anne Street.
Margaret died in 1940, aged 60. Dennis survived her by about nine years. He died at St Catherine's Hospital in Birkenhead on 3rd October 1949, aged 73.
