J.L. and Martha moved to a rented farm southeast of Thornton. Within a few years, for $10.00 per acre, they purchased one-half section of land 2 miles south of Thornton. He farmed for many years and then became cashier at the First National Bank and was also a stockholder. He left the bank to become part-owner/operator of the Thornton Hardware Store, where he continued working until his retirement.”S1
