John Erasmus Henderson was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales during 1859 to John Henderson, a farmer and Isabella Campbell. He was fair haired and had very bright blue eyes.

Erasmus worked as a labourer, rigger and sailor. Later in life after his family moved to Essex, he is working as an agricultural labourer in Pembrokeshire. He was known to drink a lot of alcohol and become abusive. His death was registered in Epping, Essex, England during 1934, where his children were living however he is buried at St James Church in Walwyn's Castle where he had remained. His headstone reads:
