John HAMILTON was born 1jan1794 at Glasgow (vital records). John was known as John George Hamilton; he married (1) Christina MONTEITH and had son Lt. Col. Christian Monteith Hamilton of 92nd Reg. (information from R. Kelly, worldconnect). Christiana Monteith (b 2nov1797) daughter of Provost Henry Monteith (b 1765, d. 14dec1848, Carstairs, Lanarkshire, bur. Ramshorn cemetery) and Christiana Cameron of Carntyne (d. 22jan1818), married 12aug1823 John ("Provosts of Glasgow from 1609 to 1832"). Henry Monteith was born apr1765 at Anderston, Glasgow, son of James Monteith and Rebecca Thomson, and died 14dec1848 at Carstairs, Lanarks, bur dec1848 at Ramshorn cemetery, Glasgow (Latter Day Saints, see article on James Monteith of Anderston in “Curiosities of Glasgow citizenship”). John married (2) Helen HAMILTON in 1oct1827 (R. Kelly, K. Smith, rootsweb). Glasgow PO Directory 1841 lists John George Hamilton, 157 St. Vincent St. In 1861 John lived with spouse Helen at 151 St. Vincent St. (R. Kelly). John George Hamilton (b. abt 1794) died 1866 (scotlandspeople). Scottish archives have the wills of John George Hamilton, merchant in Glasgow, afterwards residing at Laggarie, Row, Dumb., d. 22dec1866 at Laggarie, reg. 1868 (eik 1896) Dumbarton, and Helen Hamilton, Laggary, Row, widow of John George Hamilton, merchant, Glasgow, d. 23mar1886 at Laggary (scotlandspeople).
