Facts and Events
John Sherman Gile, known as “Jack,” was born on 22 January 1879 in Norway, Republic, Kansas. Caroline may have been thinking of her brother John, who died during the Civil War, when she named both John Sherman and John Lathrop. He was her closest brother in age, and he died right before she was married. That would explain why she gave the same name to two sons in a row. Apparently other family members liked the name John as well, as in a letter from relatives in Ohio dated June 15, 1879, an Aunt Sally (whom I have not been able to identify at this point in time) writes, speaking of John Sherman, “I am glad your little one is named Johnny. I will send him a quarter of a dollar for his name.” When his father died in 1911, Jack inherited the homestead and took care of his widowed mother. He married Vuta Lotus Thorp on 2 May 1919 in Kansas. Vuta had been previously married to a man with the name of Hart, and had a son, Melvin Hart, from her previous marriage at the time she married Jack. Jack died on 6 March 1960 at the age of 81 in Kennewick, Benton, Washington. He was buried in Grandview, Yakima, Washington. References
