    In 1338 Robert de Stangrave and Joan his wife conveyed the manor of Crowhurst to John Gainsford and Margaret his wife. Later in the same year Robert also granted them a messuage, a carucate of land and 10 marks rent in Crowhurst. John Gainsford received licence for the celebration of divine service in the oratory of his manor of Crowhurst shortly after. This family continued to hold Crowhurst for nearly four centuries. John Gainsford and Margery held as late as 1348..."
