John Ferree was born May 17, 1761 in Pennsylvania, the son of Philip and Sarah Evans Ferree and great grandson of Madam Ferree. He died August 17, 1839 in Clermont County, Ohio and is buried in a private cemetery in Owensville, Stonelick Township.

He was a private in Captain John Slaymaker's Company, 7th Battalion, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania militia.

He married Rebecca Marsh in January 1792 in Bracken County, Kentucky. Shortly after the marriage he bought a farm near Augusta on which he lived until he moved to Clermont County. He was the father of twelve children.

Children of John and Rebecca Marsh Ferree: David Ferree born 1/12/1793 William Ferree born 4/2/1794 Moses Ferree born 5/14/1795 John Ferree born11/12/1796 Isaac Ferree born 6/18/1798 Minerva Ferree born 3/6/1800 Thomas Ferree born 12/27/1801 Snowdon Ferree born 7/1/1804 Sara E. Ferree born 11/12/1805 Richard Ferree born 11/24/1807 Mary Ann Ferree born 1/4/1811 Philip Gatch Ferree born 51/8/1814

In 1809 John and his brother, Isaac went to Clermont County, Ohio from Bracken County, Kentucky and settled near Boston (now Owensville) along what is now US 50.

John was a Methodist Circuit rider preacher in southwestern Ohio. He is mentioned in a book "Footprints of an Itinerate". He attended a seminary in Augusta, Bracken County before he and his family went to Ohio. He was one of the pioneer Methodists of Clermont County. The Methodist church of Boston was started in John's house and preaching was held there until a church was built at Boston in 1831. He died at an advanced age leaving to his posterity an untarnished reputation for honesty, piety, and industry.

The Ferree Family Bible (see Master Sources, listed as Bible, Ferree Family) notes reported by Mrs. Leonard Brown to Joseph A. Ferree by letter on 30 September 1969 list eleven children and their birth dates.

The names are: David, William, Moses, John, Isaac, Minerva, Snowden, Sarah, Richard, Polly Ann and Philip Gatch. Note that Polly Ann has been listed by some as Mary Ann. Thomas is not included in the list. However, the birthdate given for Snowden (next in birth order) is 27 December 1801 suggesting the possibility that in transcribing the material Thomas was skipped.

Ms. Brown states her descent is from Philip Gatch Ferree (born 18 May 1814).
