John and Sarah were living in the household of Samuel McGowan (her brother?) in Lowndes County in the 1850 census; later they moved to Texas. Polk County, Texas newspaper obituary: "Dr. John Fisher Eckford died Jan 19, 1860 at his residence in Polk County, Texas in the 34th year of his age. He was born in Tennessee May, 1826. In 1850 he was licensed at New Orleans to practice medicine, and the same year he married an amiable and interesting lady, Miss Sarah McGowan, who survives him. In 1858 he was elected County Commissioner for Polk County. Possessing a nicely balanced mind and sound judjment and unwavering integrity, he was eminently fitted for the profession of his choice and was remarkably successful." Check Polk County Will Book B, pp 41-42. In 1858 John F. Eckford (a Methodist Minister) of San Jacinto was appointed an appraiser for a Polk Co estate. |
