Kegley's Virginia Frontier pg 533 In the fall and winter of 1776-1777 he (John Bowman) raised two companies of men numbering about one hundred under Capt. Henry Pauling and John Dunkin who he led to Kentucky for the defense of the country ,arriving there about the first of August, 1777. (Draper Mss. 4C132 and 17J35).

He served in the Revolutionary War as a Captain. The family was taken captive into Canada during the Revolution and the youngest daughter was born there.
