Thomas Dunkin emigrated from Scotland to Ireland,
c1740 to Pennsylvania
c. 1765 family left Pennsylvania and settled in Botetourt Co., VA, near the town of Fincastle,
By 1769 Thomas' son, Person:John Dunkin (2), with his aged mother, wife and children, three of whom were born before leaving PA, had reachd Elk Garden and established a home on the extreme frontier of Virginia.
In 1779 they further migrated to new land in Kentucky.
