At the time of his father's death, John was not present, nor did he send any correspondence saying he had received his inheritance. When James' will was settled, John's portion was being held in trust for him by the executor.

Normally, the eldest son would be executor. Instead, we find Rebecca's husband, Joseph Peden, along with Alexander Peden, named. According to the court records, Alexander did most of the work.
