  1. History.

There was an account of John Barger Dobyns, a leading citizen of Marion Co IN, published in Pictorial and Biographical Memoirs of Indianapolis and Marion County Indiana, published in 1893 by Goodspeed Brothers of Chicago. In this generally but not entirely accurate account, Dangerfield Dobyns and his family are said to have arrived at Flat Rock, Shelby Co IN on 9 Nov 1834. According to the General Land Office (GLO) records, Dangerfield Dobyns applied for three land patents for land in Johnson Co IN by personally appearing before appropriate officials in Indianapolis on 1 Aug 1835. The actual issue date of the land patents was 20 Mar 1837, by which time Dangerfield had apparently died and the process was completed by his wife and children. He obtained 160 acres of land at a cost of $1.25 per acre. According to the John Barger Dobyns biographical listing, Dangerfield became ill on the way home from applying for the land and died shortly thereafter in Shelby Co IN. This was apparently from a contagious disease of some sort, because John Barger Dobyns became ill at the same time.
