Fauquier Countians in the Revolution Dearing, John, 2nd Lt., Wm. Ball's Co., Fauq. Militia, Mar. 1778; 1st Lt. under Maj. Francis Triplett at Cowpers. Brought Fauquier troops back after Cowpers, Jan. 1781. Footnote, pg. 385: "John Dearing, 1746-1822, is mentioned in several pension records as Captain, but he was recommended as an ensign in the Fauquier Militia, 27 Aug. 1781. The pension records may reflect a later rank. He was probably sergeant at Cowpers. He was later prominent in Fauquier and in 1797 was one of the original trustees of Salem (Marshall) Va. He lived on Thumb Run in the Manor of Leeds where he had leased 200 A. and in July 1798, he petitioned the Court to condemn one acre belonging to Isaac Arnold opposite his own to erect a grist mill.
