Just 19 years old when the Revolution began. Seved under Captain John Warner.

The farm which John's father had so long occupied by a lease from Colonel Frederick Philips was, after the war, confiscated with other portions of farms of his manor by the State of New York. John De Voe bought 136 acres back December 1785. Built a new house on the property about 200 yards above the old one. 1799 built a stone house adjoining this.
