Previous to the War of 1812 was a non-commissioned officer in Cpt. Lewis Rich's company, Tonkers, in Lt. Col. Jonathan Varian's regiment, Westchester Co. On the opening of the War, a draft was ordered in the regiment, by which every tenth man (including DeVoe) was enrolled. Served six months over two years, three months' service at a time. NY From America's Successful Men in Affairs, Volume I p. 190: "John De Voe possessed the martial spirit of his father, and served a part of the first year of the War of 1812 in the regiment of Lieut. Col. Jonathan Varian. In 1807, he married Sophia, daughter of Thomas Farrington, of Mile Square, in Yonkers. Of his family of ten children, Frederick William De Voe was the youngest. " References
