Possible origins of the Daniels family

The surname Daniel, Daniell, Daniels and Daniells is of Norman origin and many with this surname are descended from Roger Daniel who came to England with William the Conqueror in the battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Roger Daniel came from Asnières-en-Bessin in Bayeux in Normandy. He fought with William in his successful attack on England and for his services he was awarded land in Filsham in Sussex.

The Buckinghamshire Daniel, Daniells and Daniels families of Shenley, Stoney Stratford and Whaddon are almost certainly related to this Norman line. First of all a surname density map of the Daniel(l)(s) surname shows an isolated cluster around the Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire border, which centers around Newbury manor in Flitton, which was owned by a known descendant of Robert D'Anyers. The maps below show this cluster. Flitton is located in the Ampthill area and Whaddon, Shenley and Stoney Stratford are located in the Newport Pagnell area. Thomas Daniel (Stephen Daniell, William Danyell, Edward Danyell), b. 1590 d. 1650, of Newbury Maror, Flitton, Bedfordshire, also owned land in Buckinghamshire, including a farm in Bletchley.

Christopher Daniel, born 1535 in Linford just north of Little Woolstone in Buckinghamshire, married Elizabeth Forster from Hanslope in 1560. The Forster family are listed as gentry in the 1634 visitation of Buckinghamshire and Christopher Daniel appears in their family tree.

It is interesting to note how close Linford is to Little Woolstone, the place where Thomas Daniel, the ancestor of the Shenley and Stoney Stratford Daniells/Daniels families, married and was probably born. It appears probable then that Christopher Daniel of Linford was the ancestor of the Buckinghamshire Daniels and was related to the Daniells of Flitton, both being descended from the D'Anyers of Cheshire.
