    John A. Coffman was born in Shenandoah County, Virginia, between 1797 and 1800. He was the son of Augustine Kauffman Jr and Mary Catherine (Houtz) Kauffman. He married Rebecca Hausenfluck in 1820 and they had five children together. They resided at "Coffmantown," a few miles west of Woodstock, Virginia. He passed away in 1878. Census records all give his age a few years more than the age in his death announcement, but that may be because Rebecca was older than John, and so his age was a bit exaggerated when the census taker came around.
